The Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Tech Hokies both opened their season on the wrong foot, losing to the Miami Hurricanes 21-16 on Saturday.
It was the first time the Hurricanes have lost a regular season game since the 2006 season.
The game was also their only defeat this season.
On paper, this should be a pretty easy win for Miami.
Virginia Tech had won three of their last four games, including a win in the ACC Championship Game against the Florida State Seminoles.
The Hokies had also lost in the NCAA Tournament the season before and their last regular season victory was a 24-20 overtime loss to Miami in the 2012 ACC Tournament semifinals.
The Hurricanes had won 11 games in a row, including two of their final six.
However, in the end, Miami was too good to be true.
With just under two minutes remaining in regulation, Hurricanes quarterback Ryan Switzer threw a touchdown pass to tight end D.J. Pettway.
Pettman beat linebacker Chris Borland with a diving tackle, but the Hokies were able to recover.
Miami scored the first touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run by Treon Harris.
However, Virginia Tech’s Chris Borrest, who caught the touchdown pass, was carted off the field with an apparent head injury.
Virginia Tech finished the first half with a 24 points.
It was the fourth time this season the Hokie offense has scored 20 points or more.
This was the second time this year the Hurricanes scored at least 25 points in a game.
In 2015, they led 27-7 at halftime and never trailed again.
But it was not enough.
After a few plays, the Hokied offense found a big play in the red zone.
On third-and-10, Pettway found Roberson for a 6-yard touchdown run to make it a 21-17 game.
It capped off an impressive offensive display from the Hokiest.
“The second half was pretty good, too.
I thought our defense was pretty solid,” Virginia Tech head coach Mark Richt said.
Richt added that he thought Miami’s offense was the better one this year.
Florida State has won three straight against Virginia Tech.
In the ACC Tournament, the Hurricanes had beaten the Seminoles twice this season, with a 43-31 victory in Miami in 2014 and a 38-31 win in Blacksburg in 2014.
At this point, this is all just a game for the record books.
