(Photo: USA TODAY Sports)WASHINGTON — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has given up trying to change the minds of fans and players who have expressed their disapproval of the game, which is scheduled to be broadcast on CBS from the Lincoln Financial Field in Lincoln, Neb.
The NFL is the only major sports league not to allow its games to be televised.
It has been unable to win a single Super Bowl since the 1994 game between Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.
That was the last time a game was played on Sunday in the U.S. Goodell says he doesn’t feel the league should be forced to play.
He also said he’s not worried about a new boycott from the public.
“I don’t feel that’s the proper approach to take.
I think it’s time for the fans to get their voice heard.
They’re the ones who have to choose, not the commissioner,” Goodell said during an interview with USA TODAY’s David Allen Thursday.
Goodell, whose son, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, was arrested in New Jersey on suspicion of domestic violence, said the NFL is working on ways to make the game more accessible.
The league has been trying to bring the game back to the NFL-owned venues since the 2012 season.
It began with the Redskins-49ers game, when Goodell said he was “delighted” the NFL would play on Sunday.
The Patriots-Redskins game, however, was canceled after a domestic violence charge against Brady.
In December, Goodell said the league had decided it would not play the game on Sunday because of the charges.
The NFL is now working on the game in conjunction with NFLPA President Eric Winston and the players’ union.
Goodell said his goal is to make Sunday a “game that is open to all” in the league, something that has been difficult during the protests of last year’s presidential election in which supporters of President Donald Trump took to the streets to protest his policies.
The Patriots and the Redskins played the last game in the Superdome in 2013.
The teams have been on the road for three of the past four Super Bowls, and the games were not televised in the United States.
The first game was scheduled to go on as scheduled this season, but the NFL said that scheduling conflict was “an unforeseen scheduling issue.”
Goodell said Thursday that the league has reached out to the teams about Sunday’s game.
Goodell declined to say when he will make the decision.
