A little over a month after the Virginia Tech football program clinched its first-ever BCS bowl berth, head coach James Franklin and his team will have to find a way to get to the Oct. 6 game against rival Virginia Tech.
The Hokies will be without starting quarterback and two-time Heisman Trophy winner Christian McCaffrey, who will miss his third straight game with a broken leg.
The other two players that will miss the Hokies season opener are running back Josh Ferguson and defensive tackle John Bonney.
The other three ACC teams that will be playing Virginia Tech in the ACC tournament opener are ACC opponents Duke, Virginia, and Clemson.
In total, Virginia Tech will play 14 ACC opponents.
The ACC Tournament is a three-team playoff format where teams play each other for the second-ever bowl berth.
Virginia Tech is expected to win its first bowl game in school history, while the Hokieds are hoping for a third.
The Virginia Tech-Virginia Tech matchup will be a rematch of last season’s ACC Championship game.
The Hokies won that one in Charlottesville, but it was a season-ending blowout for Virginia Tech, who fell short of the BCS title.
The Cavaliers lost out to Clemson in the title game.
Virginia Tech will open the 2018 season against No. 3 Alabama in the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship Game at 3 p.m.
The game will be televised nationally by CBS.
The 2017 College Football Playoffs featured Clemson beating No. 2 Virginia Tech (34-24) in the second round.
Virginia finished the season No. 8 in the AP poll and will face No. 12 Alabama in this year’s College Football title game, which is set for Dec. 1.
The Crimson Tide will likely play in the Rose Bowl, which would be the third consecutive year Clemson is set to play in Pasadena.
The Clemson-Virginia game is expected be the biggest matchup of the bowl season, with Clemson hosting the ACC’s top seed.
Clemson will host No. 7 Florida State in the first game of the semifinal, while Virginia Tech hosts No. 5 Notre Dame in the third.
The Orange Bowl will be played Dec. 14 in Pasadena, California.
The Orange Bowl has been played annually since 1994, and it will be the first time the winner of the Orange Bowl is the national champion since the 2001 College Football Championship Game.
The winner will play in a national title game in the College Football Bowl Championship Subdivision.
This will be Franklin’s first bowl appearance since 2010, when the Hokie team defeated No. 15 Clemson in overtime in the Orange Stadium.
The Virginia Tech team won the game 31-28, but Franklin and the team were outscored 38-3 in the final seconds.
The first two games of the regular season will be held on the road, with a matchup against the Georgia Tech Hokies on Oct: 5 and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Oct.: 8.
The second game of this regular season is scheduled for Nov. 4 in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Falcons will host Virginia Tech on Nov. 11, and the Hoky team will play the Falcons on Nov: 17.
The Falcons are projected to win the ACC and the ACC title game this year.
