Posted November 13, 2018 12:07:50 – What happens when an Auburn football team faces a Wake Forest football team?
Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, in his second season, was not expecting a rematch against the Demon Deacons, who are in the ACC Coastal Division.
“It was not a game I expected to play in the Southland Conference,” Malzhan said.
“They’re playing us in the first week of November, which is an important time of year for us.”
In a conference with two non-conference games coming in November, Auburn will be looking for a third win over the Demon Dukes to improve its bowl odds.
As far as the schedule, Auburn has six ACC games to play this year, including two against non-power opponents, one against a Power Five opponent and a conference title game.
Wake Forest plays a team that is not in the Big Ten or SEC, and has played a non-Power Five opponent, Clemson, in the last two years.
Malzahn said the Tigers would like to have an early start in the season, but also would like more time to prepare.
He also said he did not anticipate playing the Wake Forest defense that led the nation in sacks last season.
“They’re not as good as we think they are, and they’re not the same team,” Malzy said.
This will be Malz’s first visit to Wake Forest since he left the program in 2016.
Aubacoes’ last game in the SEC came on Nov. 13, 2016, when the Tigers played at Arkansas.
The Demon Deacon defense allowed just four sacks on the year, with a sack rate of 8.3 percent.
Despite playing in a league with the likes of Alabama, LSU and Florida State, Auburn had the lowest sack rate among teams with at least 10 games.
Mazeman said the team had the luxury of playing two games against Wake Forest and Florida in the next two weeks.
After the team met in the regular season, it won 10-6.
There is a chance the Tigers face Wake Forest in the Orange Bowl, the final game of the regular-season schedule, as a nonconference opponent.
It would be the third time Auburn has faced Wake Forest this season, after it lost 38-14 to the Demon Academicals on Nov, 10, 2018.
